Digital Safety Presentations

Thursday Apr 11

Our School Council has been discussing the benefits of holding information sessions for students and parents to raise awareness about online safety risks. I have spoken to the Dragonfly Counselling and Support Centre and arranged three age-appropriate presentations that will take place in the School Library for our students on Thursday, April 11, 2024. Students will only attend the presentation indicated for their grade level.

As per Section 58.1 of the Alberta Education Act, you as a parent/guardian may request that your child be excluded from these presentations. Please complete the form relative to these presentations that has been loaded into your child’s Powerschool account and indicate if you DO or DO NOT give consent for your child to be at the presentation. Note: Students whose form is not completed or whose form indicates they do not have consent to attend will remain in their classroom with a supervisor.

Parents are also welcome to attend the presentations. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at the school.

Sincerely,  Daryl Chattargoon (Principal)

Presentation Topics:
Digital Safety – Kindergarten to Gr 3 – 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Children are online earlier than ever. This program helps prepare them to be safe online. Discussing online boundaries, how to set them, why they are important, and the different kinds. Children learn the difference between public information and private information and why sharing private information is dangerous.
Online Child Sexual Exploitation – Grades 7-9 – 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
We discuss online boundaries; online consent; non-consensual photo sharing; online grooming; risks of sexting; victim-blaming; and resources to stay safe online. Teens talk about real online risks, watch some educational clips, and go through a scenario situation to test their online boundaries.
Digital Safety – Grades 4-6 – 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Continuing the conversation of online safety, children begin to learn and understand what grooming is and the tactics that some people with bad intentions may use to get our private information. Children go over private and public information and how to protect themselves online.
